Private Label, OEM and ODM Jewelry Manufacturing: What Is the Difference?

When you build a jewelry brand, three terms come up: private label, OEM and ODM. Manufacturers can use these words in different senses, which causes confusion. In this article we explain what each model means, who it suits, and what you should settle before deciding.

What is private label?

In the private label model, the manufacturer delivers a ready product, or pieces you choose from an existing model family, under your brand name. The design burden is not on you; your job is selection, brand identity and sales. Branding work such as logo stamping, labels and packaging is part of this model. See our private label page for details.

What is OEM?

In the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) model, the design is yours. You bring a drawing, reference image or CAD file, and the workshop produces it. You own the design; the manufacturer only does the making. In jewelry this model is mostly known as contract jewelry manufacturing. It is the best route for brands that protect their own design language.

What is ODM?

In the ODM (original design manufacturer) model, the manufacturer also develops the design. You give direction: style, target customer, metal and stone preferences; the workshop turns it into a model. It is practical for brands that do not want to build a design team but want an original collection. Who owns the design and whether it is exclusive must be settled in writing.

Which one suits whom?

  • If you want a fast, simple start: private label
  • If your own design is ready: OEM
  • If you have an idea but no design team: ODM
  • If you plan a mixed collection: using all three together is possible

How does the process work at OSKA?

Only Panther and Melis are in ready stock; every other product is made from scratch to order. No customer-specific design is produced for others, and a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) is signed on request. For the design stages see jewelry CAD design and prototyping, and for the general flow read our made-to-order production article.

What to ask before deciding

Who keeps the design rights? Will the model be exclusive to you? How will the sample be made? At which stage will branding be added? The answers vary by production model and are confirmed in writing at the quotation stage. Price, time and minimum quantity also depend on the model and product; we give no figures in this article.

Sample and payment

Samples are paid; if an order is placed, the amount is deducted from the order total. A deposit is taken when the order is confirmed and the balance is paid on delivery. Every product is delivered with a karat hallmark, and diamonds and lab-grown diamonds with GIA or IGI certificates.

Short checklist

  • Which model suits you: private label, OEM or ODM?
  • Have you settled design rights and confidentiality in writing?
  • Do you know the sample terms and the payment plan?
  • Which models, metals and stones do you want?
