What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond produced in a controlled laboratory environment, with the same chemical structure (pure carbon) and the same crystal arrangement as a natural diamond. Its hardness, brilliance and light refraction are the same as a natural diamond's. The only difference is where it forms: one forms deep in the earth over millions of years, the other in a laboratory within weeks.

How It Differs from Natural Diamond

  • Origin: A natural diamond comes out of a mine; a lab-grown diamond is grown in a laboratory.
  • Appearance: They cannot be told apart by eye; special instruments make the distinction.
  • Design freedom: Larger models with more stones become possible within the same budget.

How Is It Used in Jewelry?

Lab-grown diamonds are used in solitaire, halo, eternity and tennis designs with 14 karat and 18 karat gold, and also with 925 silver. Stone diameter, karat and gold color are determined according to the order.
